Gainesville, GA — A pilot was killed and a flight instructor was badly injured last week in the Gainesville area after a deadly plane crash. The victims were identified as Lawrence Youhanaian, 74, (the pilot who passed away) and Kelly Chandler, 50 (the flight instructor who was injured).
Police said that this happened near the Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport, which is on the southwest side of Gainesville. Youhanaian was flying a small plane with Chandler as a flight instructor.
As the plane was headed toward the airport, witnesses reported seeing it fly very low and clipping a power utility pole with its wing. The plane then rolled over and landed upside down.
The accident killed Lawrence Youhanaian at the scene, but Chandler was able to be rescued. She was taken to a hospital to be treated for major injuries. The plane had taken off from the airport just a few minute beforehand.
Chandler has been a flight instructor for 7 years and was working with Lanier Flight Center, it looks like.
