Cypress, TX — Late last week, there was a fatal car accident in Cypress that claimed the life of one man and injured another. Police said that a driver (Jairo Quintanilla) was killed and his passenger (Mitchell Maerz) was injured after their SUV caught fire in a wreck.
This happened last Friday (October 17, 2014) at about 8:00 p.m. Quintanilla was driving a Saturn SUV along U.S. 290’s frontage road that night with Maerz as a passenger. Near Huffmeister Road, he lost control of his SUV for unknown reasons and swerved into a construction zone.
The SUV crashed into a barricade and then overturned onto its side. During the rollover, the SUV caught fire and trapped Quintanilla inside. Witnesses to the accident ran for help and were able to extract Maerz, but Quintanilla died at the scene.
The accident is still being investigated, though police believe that the SUV may have been speeding before the wreck. Mitchell Maerz’ condition isn’t being released right now.
