Richland Parish, LA — A woman died following an accident with a Freightliner truck on Thursday, September 25, 2014. The accident took place at the intersection of Highway 134 and Percy Higgins Road, around 8:45 in the morning.

Shirley Nobles was traveling south along Percy Higgins Road and allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 134. She made a right turn into oncoming traffic where she collided with the 18-wheeler. Emergency workers took her to Rapides Regional Medical Center where she passed away a short time later.

Cory Mayhall, the driver of the Freightliner, suffered moderate injuries and was also taken to the hospital. Neither Mayhall nor Nobles were wearing a seat belt.

Commentary

I know a lot of people think that all lawyers like myself hate truck drivers, and are taking every chance we get to talk about how they’re horrible at their job and that the world would be a better place if only we sued more of them. This is not the case. Let’s look at this driver. From what’s been reported, it seems as the accident was completely outside his control. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Speaking from a legal standpoint, he would be able to file a liability claim against the driver, just like a driver would be able to against him, had the roles here been reversed. From what I’ve read, it doesn’t seem as if he was injured too badly. However, in addition to his physical injuries, I’d be willing to bet that there’s some emotional distress that’s also taken a toll, and also needs to be addressed.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
