Valdez, AK — The F/V Fireman, a commercial fishing boat, exploded while sitting in the Valdez Small Boat Harbor in Valdez, Alaska, on Wednesday, September 17, 2014.
Emergency workers took a 62-year old man who was aboard the boat at the time to Providence Valdez Medical Center following the explosion. Officials say that he was able to walk off the boat and that his injuries were minor.
Investigators are still trying to discover what caused the explosion, which scatter debris as far away as 200 ft. from the boat. Firefighters said they found and secured a propane leak aboard the boat. The victim told police that he went to light the boat’s stove and it exploded.
The explosion didn’t cause the boat to sink, although most of its wheelhouse was torn away. The investigation continues.
