Update: The young man in this accident, Jared Thomas, died on Friday (September 19, 2014) at the University Medical Center.
Lubbock, TX — An SUV overturned along Highway 87 in southern Lubbock this past Wednesday evening (September 10, 2014), leaving a young man and his pregnant young woman passenger injured. Police said that Jared Thomas, 23, was critically injured and Krystasha Benavidez, 22, was less seriously injured after Thomas lost control of his SUV on the highway.
The accident happened a few miles south of Lubbock at about 9:30 p.m. last Wednesday night. Thomas was headed south along Highway 87 in his SUV (with Benavidez as a passenger) when he tried to pass another car and lost control in the process.
His SUV overturned at least twice and ended up in the northbound lanes of the highway. Both Jared Thomas and Krystasha Benavidez were taken to a hospital, where Thomas was said to be in critical condition.
Benavidez, who was 26 weeks pregnant, was expected to recover along with her unborn child. So far, police just think that speed was a factor here, but they said some more investigation would be done.
