Waco, TX — The driver of the car that hit and critically injured Christopher Yarbro was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the accident, police believe. The accident took place in Waco, Texas, on Saturday, September 13, 2014.
Police say that Yarbro was walking near the intersection of 58th Street and Sanger Avenue around two in the morning when he was hit by a car that then fled the scene. Emergency workers transported Yarbro to a local hospital.
The car police believe to have been involved in the accident was found a short time later. Its driver, identified as 37-year old Christopher Oliver, was charged with DWI. Police have said that the investigation into the accident is ongoing and that it’s possible further charges will be brought against him.
As of Monday 9/15, there had been no update on Yarbro’s condition.

Commentary
Let’s assume that everything being reported in the news is true. Actions have consequences. The driver of the car made a decision to drink and to get behind the wheel of a car. That’s on him and he should be held responsible for it. But there’s something else here that we may be overlooking. It’s possible this guy was drinking at home or at a friend’s, but the time of day in which the accident occurred suggests that it’s possible he had been out at a bar, and was on his way home.
Everyone is responsible for their own actions, but alcohol can affect the decision-making areas of our brain. That’s part of the reason Texas has laws regulating the sale of alcohol. Bars and similar establishments aren’t allowed to serve alcohol to someone who is already intoxicated, bottom line. If that driver here was being served when he should have been cut off, and then went out and got into an accident, the bar was a contributing factor in that accident, and should also be held responsible. My point is that both parties should be held liable, not just the driver who hit the victim with his car.
