Carpinteria, CA — Police have identified Daniel Perez as the teenager who was killed in an accident with an 18-wheeler on Wednesday, August 27, 2014. The accident took place on Highway 101, near Carpinteria, California.
According to local officials, Perez entered Highway 101 using the Lake Casitas off-ramp. Traveling in the wrong direction, he collided with a semi-truck, which flipped his car over. His injuries were fatal.
The identity of the truck driver has not been released. He was reportedly uninjured.
Police are currently investigating the accident in an attempt to discover what caused Perez to enter the highway through the on-ramp.

Commentary
There are still several unanswered questions here, and we’re going to have to wait until authorities complete their investigation before a way forward can be determined. However, I will say that despite the fact that the victim was driving the wrong way on the highway and in that way was in the wrong, it wouldn’t give any oncoming traffic an excuse to just run into him. It’s possible that if it’s found that the truck did anything wrong, that the driver, and by extension the trucking company, could be found partially liable for the accident. I have no reason to believe that this is the case, but it’s a very real possibility.
