Bullard, TX — An accident in which a bicyclist was clipped by a passing truck took place on Highway 69 in Bullard, Texas, on Monday, July 14, 2014. The victim has been identified as Mark Cathey, a California man.
“I remember riding up the overpass and I don’t remember anything after that,” Cathey said about the accident. As he road across an overpass on Highway 69, we was clipped by Samuel Vercher. Vercher stopped and called 911 after the accident.
The accident itself was caught on camera, as Cathey has been recording his bike rides for years. You can watch the video below.
Cathey was taken to a local hospital with broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a broken shoulder blade. He expects to make a full recovery in 2-3 months.
Police cited Vercher for failure to maintain a single lane.

Commentary
This sounds like an accident in which the driver of the truck just wasn’t paying enough attention to the road, or more specifically, what his truck was doing on the road. Hopefully this illustrates how easy it is for your vehicle to drift — potentially causing an accident — whenever your mind wanders. Police have ruled that this accident was unintentional. There’s no doubt in my mind that this was unintentional. However, unintentional doesn’t necessarily equal not liable. The driver still caused the victim’s injuries, and is going to need to step up and make that right.
