11-Year Old Seriously Injured in Car Accident at S. Staples and Wooldridge in Corpus Christi, Texas

Corpus Christi, TX — An 11-year old boy was hospitalized after the car he was riding in was crashed into at an intersection in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Thursday, July 17, 2014.

The boy was riding along with his family in a Mercury sedan and had stopped at a light at the intersection of South Staples Street and Wooldridge Road. The driver of a black SUV traveling behind them claims to have not seen that the light at the intersection was red and crashed into the back of the car.

The two parents riding in the front were not seriously injured. However, three children in the backseat — an 11-year old, a 10-year old, and a 7-year old — were all taken to Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

At last report, the 11-year had serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Commentary

From what’s been reported, it doesn’t seem like there’s any disputing that the SUV is responsible for the accident. Not knowing that a light was red before blowing through an intersection isn’t exactly arguing in your favor. If anything, this is just a reminder that people need to be more mindful of their surroundings while out on the road. Mindful of things like whether or not the cars at an intersection are moving or not. And if not, why not? Luckily, this accident was nowhere near as bad as it could have been.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
