Midland, TX — A 7-year old boy was involved in a car accident when a woman crashed into a vehicle near the intersection of Andrews Highway and Midland Drive in Midland, Texas, on Thursday, June 26, 2014.
According to officials, the accident was minor. The woman, identified as Dawn Ryan, reportedly told police that, “she had too much to drink and that [the police] might as well put her in handcuffs.”
Ryan went on to tell police that, earlier that afternoon, she had been drinking at Fast Freddy’s. Soon after, police found the 7-year old in the backseat of her vehicle.
At this time, the relationship between Ryan and the boy is not clear.
Ryan has been charged with DUI with a child under the age of 15. If convicted, she could be sentenced to up to two years in prison.

There are several words that come to mind when I read about accidents like this. Stupid is a big one. It’s one thing to put yourself at risk when you drink and get behind the wheel of a car. It’s another to knowingly put a young child at risk. Fast Freddy’s may share some of the liability here, as well. The woman said she had been drinking there — that afternoon — and knew that she was too drunk to drive. Who was serving her at the bar? Was she visibly intoxicated while she was there? If she was, and no one was bothering to cut her off, then they’re also to blame for the accident. The police need to do a little rotting around on that one, but it definitely needs to be looked into.
