Willie Pittman One of Two Indiana DOT Employees Hit by Semi-Trailer in Hancock County, IN

Hancock County, IN — Two employees with the Indiana Department of Transportation were injured when a semi-truck collided with their truck in Hancock County, Indiana, last Thursday. The accident took place on Interstate 70, around 5:45 in the afternoon.

According to reports, the semi-truck was trying to move around traffic on the interstate when it crashed into the truck. Inside the INDOT truck were Willie Pittman and Mark Evans. Evans was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Pittman was taken to St. Vincent in critical condition.

At this time, it’s not clear what caused the truck driver to drive into the INDOT truck.

The driver of the 18-wheeler has been identified as Daniel Kebebe.

Commentary

Fortunately, no one was killed in this accident. Unfortunately, we still don’t have answers as to what caused it. Witnesses at the scene said that it looked like the driver of the semi didn’t even step on his brakes before the collision. I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt. It’s possible that there’s a reason for why things happened the way they did. However, as things stand now, it seems that the truck driver is at fault for the accident. If that’s the case, the victim’s are likely going to have a fight on their hands, as the trucking company is only going to be concerned with protecting its bottom line, regardless of who was at fault. It may be a cynical viewpoint to take, but it’s something I’ve over and over again in similar cases I’ve been involved with.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
