CASSPOLIS, MI — One man died after a tractor-trailer collision that happened in in Cassopolis, Michigan on Thursday, May 1st, 2014, according to the report from WKZO.

Investigators have said that they have reason to believe Jon Stone was killed when the vehicle he was driving was hit by a tractor-trailer after pulling in front of it while driving on Highway 205.

Scene of the Accident

Jon Stone was cut from the wreckage and pronounced dead on the scene by emergency responders. A passenger in his vehicle was identified in the report as Donald Barbo, who was taken by EMS personnel to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries.

Investigators hope to release the findings of their investigation at a later date.

Commentary:

People will surely look at this accident and be quick to blame the driver, when there could be more to this accident than what we see in the news report. Determining the speed of a car that is traveling toward you is difficult, and this is no different with a tractor-trailers. If the driver was attempting to turn, and the truck was speeding, the driver may have anticipated enough time and space to pull off the turn. If investigators discover that the driver of the truck was speeding, there could be some liability in the lap of the trucking company.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
