Commentary
Anyone who chooses to drink and then get behind the wheel of a car is making a terribly, terribly stupid mistake. And when they do that and cause an accident, they should be punished. But it would be wrong to look past the people who they get their alcohol from. It’s one thing for someone to buy alcohol from a corner store, but it’s another to be served alcohol in a bar or restaurant when you are visibly intoxicated. Dram shop laws, as they’re called, were created to help regulate the safe and responsible sale of alcohol, and can hold servers liable if they choose to serve someone who is already visibly drunk. Massachusetts has these laws, and they’ve done a lot to fight back against the drunk driving problem in this country. Of course, we don’t know if that is what happened here. Authorities need to work through their investigation first.
