Commentary:
While we have virtually no information about the cause of this accident, the fact that a fire was reported should raise more than a few eyebrows. Cars are tested over an over again for crash worthiness, and vehicles have some degree of fire prevention and containment engineered into them. If any part of this vehicle was defective, and caused a fire after an accident, the manufacturer of the car may be liable for a potion of the accident if it was made worse by their vehicle’s inherent design fault. If investigators look carefully enough, they could discover a problem that is built into many vehicles on the road, and investigating it could lead to a recall later on down the road.
