UPDATE: Logan Simmons Killed in Car Accident in Shelby County, Texas

SHELBY COUNTY, TX — One child is dead after a serious single-vehicle accident that happened in Shelby County, Texas on Saturday, April 19th, 2014, according to a news article from KTRE.

Investigators say 7-year-old Logan Simmons was killed when the vehicle he was a passenger in drifted off the road before returning and rolling several times while driving on Highway 7 around 2:00 Saturday afternoon.

Scene of the Accident

Logan Simmons was taken by EMS personnel to a Louisiana State University Hospital where he died a number of days after his arrival. Also hurt in the crash was Michal, Breonna, Sarah, and Katelyn Simmons, who were taken to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries.

Officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety was assisting with the crash investigation.

Commentary:

Whenever there is an accident with an ejection, people automatically assume that they were not belted into the car, and there is nothing they could have done, when this really isn’t the case with many accidents. Just like any other part on your vehicle, or any mechanical device with moving parts for that matter, seat-belts can falter and fail. The problem is, you only know a transmission breaks when the car doesn’t move, but you never know what may be wrong with the seat-belt because they arent regularly exposed to the stresses that the device is supposed to function under. Fortunately any time a part fails, it leaves evidence of such a failure, and a trained investigator may be able to spot what the initial police report may have overlooked.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
