IRVING, TX — A massive chain-reaction accident took the lives of two children in Irving, Texas on Saturday, March 29th, 2014, according to a news report from The Houston Chronicle.
Police with details of the crash investigation have said that both 14-year-old Angel Reyes and 16-year-old Ricardo Hernandez were killed when the vehicle they were passengers in collided with two parked cars while driving on East Pioneer Drive. The accident was reported around 8:00 pm.
Scene of the Accident
Angel Reyes and Richardo Hernandez were pronounced dead on the scene when EMS personnel arrived. Two other children were also seriously injured in the accident.
The driver of the vehicle was identified in the report as Crystal Suniga, who currently faced drunk driving related charges stemming from the crash.
Commentary:
Many people are unaware of Texas’ unique liquor liability laws and how they may relate to alcohol-related accidents. In the State of Texas, if a bar, nightclub, or liquor store is found to have over-served a customer who then hurts or kills themselves or another in an accident, the establishment can be found liable for the accident if they are found to have negligently served them. What is negligent service? Any time a customer walks into a bar who is already visibly drunk, they are forbidden from being served any additional alcohol, because to do so would endanger both the customer and the public at large. Also, a bar or nightclub is prohibited from serving somebody to the point of visible intoxication. I’ll never advocate a drunk driver go unpunished, but punishing a bar equally would really do wonders for the drunk driving problem in the State of Texas.
