UPDATE: Charles Taylor Injured in Tractor-Trailer Accident in Indianapolis, Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — A tractor-trailer accident left one state trooper in the hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana on Monday, February 17th, 2014, according to a news report from Fox59.

Police have said that they have reason to believe Charles Taylor was hurt when the police patrol vehicle he was in was struck by a tractor-trailer that was driving on Highway 865. The accident happened around 8:30 in the morning.

Scene of the Accident

Emergency responders transported Charles Tayler to nearby St. Vincent Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was identified as Samson Stratton, who was cited for driving too fast for road and weather conditions.

The investigation is being handled by officials from the Indiana State Police.

Commentary:

A great many people I know would hear about a major accident in heavy snow conditions and call it unavoidable due to the weather, which couldn’t be farther from the truth. Truck drivers are rigorously trained to drive in any number of adverse conditions. Drivers are to slow their speed and adjust following distances, and failure to take these actions is dangerous. There are any number of reasons why this accident could have happened, mechanical failure, driver inexperience or inattention, or mechanical failure, but all of these roads lead to the trucking company. If the driver is found to have been driving too fast for conditions, this must be proven in front of a jury, and unfortunately the burden of proof rests on the victims in situations like these.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
