HP Recalls Fax Machines Due to Fire and Burn Hazards
According to the manufacturer, Hewlett-Packard Co. is set to recall nearly 1 million fax machines due to fire and burn hazards. Totalling about 928,000 fax machines in the U.S., the recall covers HP fax 1040 and 1050 machines. The machines can overheat due to a component failure, potentially catching on fire. HP reports 7 instances of machines overheating and catching fire with one instance producing significant property damage and one resulting in a minor burn injury. HP can be contacted at 888-654-9296.
Commentary Because of the size of this recall, and the fact that one injury has occurred from the product, readers should take heed and contact the manufacturer. Typically, when a company learns of a defect in one of their products, a recall will be issued to provide notice and mitigate liability. Though the idea is to clear the market of the defective product, some still remain and could cause injury. If an injury were to occur, a thorough investigation would need to pair the defect in the machine with the injury in question.
