Kia Set to Recall Approximately 150,000 Optimas Following Airbag Issue

According to the manufacturer, Kia is set to recall roughly 150,000 vehicles due to a potential problem with the airbags. The recall includes Kia Optimas built between 2006 and 2008, as well as Kia Rondos made between 2007 and 2008. The issue with the vehicles involves the supplemental restraint system on the driver's side air bag unit. Kia expects recalls to begin in March.

Commentary

It is interesting with car companies phrase recalls in the media as voluntary. When a safety issue is determined within a member of their fleet, federal law dictates that these recalls are indeed mandatory. This is somewhat like the government's own version of mitigating liability nationwide.
I also find it noteworthy the length of time it takes a recall to begin, as a gray period between when a manufacturer became aware of a problem and when it is fixed develops. From a liability standpoint, this could be significant if an injury were to occur from the system.

As a Texas attorney practicing for 20 years, I have litigated all manner of personal injury cases. I use this blog as a place to write opinion / editorial articles on a variety of topics that catch my interest and as a means of sharing news stories relevant to personal injury accidents. I think the overwhelming majority of people are unaware just how common these types of accidents are and I hope this blog raises awareness to rather serious public safety concerns. However, this blog is simply a means for me to share my opinions and I would recommend that anyone who is considering seeking legal counsel should contact their family attorney.
