BMW Recalls 89,000 Mini Coopers Following Turbocharge Cooling System Failure

According to the manufacturer, BMW is set to recall 89,000 Mini Coopers following a circuit board failure which controls the vehicle's turbocharger cooling system. The system can create a smoldering water pump and in some matters ignite in the engine compartment. BMW is aware of 81 separate cases of water pump failure globally, leading to 4 engine compartment fires. The recall affects certain model Mini Cooper S hatchbacks and convertibles, years 2007 through 2011.

Commentary
BMW has noted that worldwide this recall reaches 235,535 Minis. This is a fairly large recall with the potential to cause injury to consumers. When a manufacturer learns of dangers with one of their products, a recall is usually issued in the effort to mitigate liability. If an injury were to occur because of a manufacturing defect, an investigation must be used to link those injuries with the problem in question. This is not an easy task as defense attorneys are adept in proving injuries were caused by some other action or product.
